GREETINGS
FROM BRIAN WORMWOOD
UCF
Recycles! Housekeeping and Recycling Services, a unit of Physical
Plant in the Facilities and Safety building #16A, is the collection
arm of the recycling effort here on the UCF campus. Many Housekeepers
and Recyclers on both the day and evening shifts work very hard to
move recyclable materials out of the waste stream into the recycling
stream.
It has been a great year for our recycling program! We have a new logo developed
by the UCF Marketing Department and approved by President Hitt. 2007 saw our
first entrance in the RecycleMania contest. We placed 139th out of 175 colleges
and universities across the nation. Our recyclers are changing their work methods
for a more efficient collection program and we have fostered a relationship
with Business Services and the Student Union building and SGA to have cardboard
dumpsters at their locations.
The University’s recycling rate for the fiscal year 2005 – 2006 was 5%, 2006 – 2007
was 8.05%, and for the current fiscal year we are running around a 13% recycling
rate! The State of Florida has mandated that all government and state buildings
maintain a 30% recycling rate – we have a way to go. We recycled 929,158 pounds
of material – but we threw away 10,610,700 pounds of material into the land
fill as trash. You may not know this, but 60% or more of all trash is probably
recyclable material – we have a long way to go UCF, so please do your part
and recycle!
